INLINE Dental News June 2011
Welcome
Thank you to all those who visited our stand at the recent ADA congress in Brisbane. It was a fantastic industry exhibition and we saw a record number of visitors to our stand during the course of the event. The Congress also received record numbers for CPD points.
We heard many positive comments from our clients regarding the quality and variety of topics included in the lecture program. Speakers were of a high calibre and the interest and feedback we received at the industry exhibition was very encouraging. The congress provided a wonderful opportunity to catch up with colleagues and industry professionals and we are looking forward to the upcoming ADX conference in Melbourne during September.
We would also like to take this opportunity to remind all of our clients that intend to finalise equipment purchases prior to June 30 to do so soon. Whilst most equipment is available in stock, customised products such as SurgiTel loupes have a lead time before the order can be completed. Call now to discuss our end of financial year promotions.

Macquarie Medical Imaging Opt for NewTom 5G
Macquarie Medical Imaging is pleased to be first medical imaging facility in Australia to install a horizontal, ultra-high resolution cone beam CT, the NewTom 5G. When The Alfred Imaging Group had the opportunity to establish a medical imaging practice providing service to the Macquarie University Hospital and The Macquarie University Clinic, they set out to establish a comprehensive medical imaging practice providing all imaging modalities available anywhere in the world. After opening its doors in July 2010 Macquarie Medical Imaging practice has been setting the steps in motion to fulfil the vision of becoming Australia’s most modern, comprehensive and virtual practice with the most state of art equipment in each medical imaging discipline.

The recent purchase of the NewTom 5G, the most up to date dental cone Beam CT available globally means Macquarie Medical Imaging rivals the most prominent medical imaging centres in the world. Its sophisticated dental imaging services allows Sydney specialists, namely maxillofacial surgeons and ENT surgeons, as well as all dental specialists access to the best dental imaging available in the world and the first of it’s kind in Australia.
NewTom 5G represents an innovation and revolution in the field of advanced imaging specifically with Cone Beam Computed Tomography. With a fascinating design, practitioners can explore new clinical applications, thanks to the open, pass-through style gantry and motorized, reclining patient's chair. The supine position of the patient during the scan and the reduced scan time add comfort and stability for an excellent result in terms of image quality and patient satisfaction.
According to Professor John Magnussen of Macquarie Medical Imaging: "Dental and maxillofacial imaging is a specialised area which requires low-dose, high-resolution imaging of fine bony structures and for which cone-beam CT is ideally suited. It is a very well-tolerated technique with the whole scan taking only 18-22 seconds in a small, patient friendly gantry."
The NewTom 5G is optimised for hard-tissue imaging at very low dose and very high resolution. It is a compact unit compared to a normal CT. Not only does it reduce the radiation dose to the patient and improve the resolution of fine bony structures, but it is better tolerated, especially for those with limited mobility compared to upright units.
The fifth generation of cone-beam CT has significantly reduced the radiation dose to the patient, which was already historically low compared with normal CT imaging. Amazingly the resolution has also improved - in small areas we can achieve <0.1mm. The NewTom 5G provides better resolution than conventional CT (<0.1mm vs 0.35mm) and at lower radiation dose (8-100x less depending upon the area being scanned).”
QR srl is the name that stands behind NewTom Cone Beam 3D Imaging units and the inventor of Dental Cone Beam technology itself. QR has over 20 years of experience and success in research, development, manufacturing and distribution of NewTom products worldwide. Manufactured in Italy, NewTom represents the Italian tradition of specialized manufacturing.

According to Giacomo Cordioli, Export Area Manager at QR srl: "There is no other unit on the market which has the same features as a 5G System. This system has a host of unique features including the smallest focal spot and is the only cone beam unit which has a rotating anode (apart from the VGi) and allows for applications which are no longer focused on dental radiology or ENT. The NewTom 5G is suited to other medical fields, which is an unquestionable advantage for radiologists."
When we began the 5G project approximately 5 years ago we wanted to improve upon the existing 3G and make a horizontal system that was eye catching, with a more practical footprint and design. It was an important design requirement to enable practitioners to work more easily than they had done in the past with a wider range of applications. In order to appeal to the radiology market it was important that we designed a unit that was multi functional. The versatile design, low dose and high resolution of the NewTom 5G offers unsurpassed CT imaging for radiologists. The image quality is far superior to market leading CT systems currently on the market.” Giacomo Cordioli, Export Area Manager at QR srl
The expanded field of view and the horizontal-bore design of the NewTom 5G allows for images of far more than teeth. Ultra-low dose, high resolution imaging is now possible of the whole cranial vault, including the sinuses, petrous temporal bones, TMJs and base of skull. With the high resolution 3D data of the NewTom 5G, MMI can generate, amongst others, perfect plane lateral and frontal cephalograms, OPG’s, TMJs, Nerve marking, Cross sectional imaging and 3D visualization & accurate 2D and 3D measurements.
At Macquarie Medical Imaging every patient is treated by an expert, and receives the very best care possible. The constant presence of fully qualified specialists allows for an unprecedented level of continuity of care for our patients and the ability to form long term relationships with our referrers, tailoring imaging studies to their preference. There are no out of pocket expenses for Medicare rebatable items and there is free on site parking.

Nomad Handheld X-ray receives Edison Best New Product Award
The worldwide leader in handheld x-ray technologies, has been honoured with a Silver Award from the internationally-known 2011 Edison Best New Product Awards™. The winners were announced April 5 during a ceremony at the historic Capitale ballroom in New York City. The NOMAD® Handheld X-ray System by Aribex was recognized in the Science and Medical Handheld or Miniaturized Devices Segment.
The Edison Awards are known around the world for honouring innovation and excellence in the development, marketing, and launch of new products and services. The awards symbolize the persistence and excellence personified by Thomas Alva Edison, inspiring America’s drive to remain in the forefront of innovation, creativity, and ingenuity in the global economy.
“This award has great personal meaning for me,” said Dr. D. Clark Turner, President and CEO of Aribex and the creator of the NOMAD. “Thomas Edison has always been a hero of mine, so it is especially gratifying to be honoured with an award bearing his name.”
The NOMAD Handheld X-ray System fills the need for a truly portable, lightweight dental x-ray device. Unlike the bulky wall-mount systems dentists traditionally used, the NOMAD is lightweight, rechargeable, and can go anywhere. The innovative internal shielding and external backscatter shield make the NOMAD so safe the operator can stay chair side with the patient. The NOMAD is rapidly becoming standard equipment in dental offices worldwide with thousands of units now in service.
Dr. Turner’s invention has also made access to dental care possible in countless remote humanitarian clinics and missions around the world. As a result, hundreds of thousands of people have benefited world-wide from improved dental care. Dr. Turner founded Aribex as a Utah corporation in 2003 to manufacture and market the device.
“This year’s awards recognize a broad array of innovations including far-reaching products, services and technologies that impact daily life,” said Edison Awards Steering Committee chair Sarah Miller Caldicott, a great grandniece of Thomas Edison. “The Awards applaud the forward-thinking innovations for which Thomas Edison remains internationally admired. It’s exciting to see companies like Aribex continuing his legacy of challenging conventional thinking.”
